18 year-old London-based rapper HEN$HAW has had quite the journey in the past 12 months. Having gone from releasing demos on SoundCloud with his best friend and go-to producer goodbyechase in his room, the rising star has built a solid and loyal fan base in and around London thanks to his music and energetic live performances. Known for his rapid-fire delivery and a razor sharp flow, HEN$HAW is rapidly becoming one of the most exciting artists in the music scene.
After spending almost 6 months writing and recording new material since the end of 2018, he’s finally released his much anticipated debut mixtape LONDON IS BURNING. Unlike his peers within the alt-rap scene, HEN$HAW has delivered a raw, organic and cohesive body of work that showcases his immense potential. He shines on the haunting opener “London Is Burning”, a track about society’s tendency to turn away from difficult social issues, and the closing track “Paper Planes” — an emotionally-driven track with introspective lyricism over a drill production.
The mixtape features stellar guest appearances by 16 year-old rapper Tm on the moody drill banger “TREKS”, goodbyechase on the radio-ready “SLIDE” and well-renowned French composer Teddy Lasry’s “Riverhead” is sampled on the underground hit “BYE”. Throughout the project HEN$HAW also showcases his versatility as he raps on a wide array of production, for instance; the gritty hip-hop banger “SCUMBAG”, the old school-feel “REVENGE FREESTYLE” and the trap metal mosh pit anthem “THIS ISN’T AN INTERLUDE”.
Overall, LONDON IS BURNING is a solid debut project conveying some strong social messages built over well-polished beats by goodbyechase — an underrated up and coming producer. This could be the beginning of something special for HEN$HAW.
