Music is now more accessible, and that’s a great thing as it makes it easier for unknown artists to distribute their music online. Although we’ve been exposed to some unforgettable songs in recent years, the majority of songs are created by talented and passionate artists from all around the world. Meet New York artist BadMoodRude, possibly one of the most diverse and unique artists out there. It’s difficult to box her into one specific genre — she blends pop, emo rap and even synthwave as heard on “Sweet Dessert”, a song French musician Kavinsky and the Stranger Things music supervisors would thoroughly enjoy.
We’ve had one of her recent releases “I Hate Boys” on repeat, it’s one of the most catchiest songs you’ll hear this year. With a fan base that’s rapidly rising and an appealing online personality, we wanted to find out more about the alluring artist. Read below:
Hey, how’s it going?
I’m great!
What have you been doing recently?
I’ve been working on new songs!
Nice! Let’s talk about your background. Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in Rochester NY.
What was it like growing up there?
I am fortunate enough to live in a place like Rochester, it is such a diverse city that offers a lot of opportunity to learn from all types of people. My parents were always about self expression, being true to you and never judging other people. I’m lucky to have grown up in such an accepting and close-knit family and in such an eclectic city.
Sounds great. Growing up, what artists were you exposed to?
My mom listened to everything from Shakira to Limp Bizkit to Meat Loaf! She was also very much about supporting the local music scene in Rochester and went to shows regularly at The Penney Arcade.
She sounds amazing! Did you even like any of those artists?
I love them! They helped make me who I am today and always bring me back to my childhood.
What artist inspired you to pursue a career in music?
I actually started making music because randomly my Grandma asked me to make a song for her to listen to and that’s how it all started!
Wowzers! How long have you been making music?
I’ve been making music since fall of 2018, I’ve worked in the music industry for a few years at The Entertainment Collective.
What’s the story behind your artist name?
Rude is my actual nickname my dad gave me as a child, it’s an amalgam of my first and middle names and the BadMood is more of a joke because I try to be very friendly towards people.
How would you describe your sound to a complete stranger?
I wouldn’t put myself into a specific genre or sound. I like to make music depending on what mood I’m in so it can be anywhere from rap to pop or ambient mellow music.
Cool. Who are you listening to right now?
I enjoy all types of music, right now I’ve been really into Bowie, Manson, and Pachebel — but I do bounce back and forth between songs I grew up with and new stuff.
You’ve released two singles in a short space of time, should we expect more music in August?
I think I might hold off releasing music in August and focus on some cool fall releases.
Let’s talk about your writing process, how do you get in the zone to write your music?
So I can’t force myself to write music and I don’t know what gets me in the zone — all of the sudden I’ll be in my car or waking up or taking a shower and I get this FEELING that I need to make some music and I’ll write 10 songs in a day.
Impressive. How long does it take you to finish a song?
Writing and recording can take me anywhere from 3-6 hours
What producers do you work with?
Timmy Rooks makes most of my beats and Paul Rusinko at Blackdog Studio engineers them.
As an artist, where do you see yourself in the next 12 months?
Hopefully I’ll be touring by then! I keep getting asked to tour but I’m waiting for the right timing.
Ah yes timing has to be right! Your Instagram is lit, you have thousands of followers. A genuine fan base. We’ve watched how you interact with your fans. What advice would you give any upcoming artist about social media interaction?
Always be kind to everyone, embrace the haters and support your friends and other artists.
I couldn’t agree more. Oh, I was wondering do you really hate boys?
I think everyone can say they hate boys at one point or another.
Do you have any upcoming shows?
No shows yet! I’m trying to really work on developing myself as an artist first
